Notes:
Place the unit away from strong light such as direct
sunlight or inverted uorescent light, which can pre-
vent proper operation of the remote controller.
Using another remote controller of the same type in
the same room or using the unit near equipment that
uses infrared rays may cause operational interference.
Do not put any object, such as a book, on the remote
controller. The buttons of the remote controller may
accidentally be pressed and drain the batteries.
Make sure the audio rack doors do not have colored
glass. Placing the unit behind such doors may prevent
proper remote controller operation.
Attach the battery
cover.
If there is an obstacle between the remote controller
and the remote control sensor, the remote controller
will not operate.
Notes:
Do not mix new batteries with old batteries. Do not
mix different kinds of batteries.
To avoid corrosion, remove the batteries if the remote
controller is not to be used for a long period of time.
Remove dead batteries immediately to avoid damage
from corrosion. If the remote controller does not
operate smoothly, replace both batteries at the same
time.
The life of the batteries supplied is about six months
but will vary depending on usage.

Connecting the A-1VL
Caution:
Before Making Any Connections
Do not connect speakers having impedance values of
4 ohms or lower.
Do not connect more than one speaker cord to indi-
vidual speaker terminals. Connecting more than one
speaker cord may cause failure.
Unnecessarily long, or very thin speaker cables may
affect the sound quality and should be avoided.
Be careful not to short the positive
and negative wires. Doing so may
Read the manuals supplied with your components.
Dont connect the power cord until youve completed
all audio and video connctions.
RCA/Phono Connection Color Coding
RCA/Phono connections are usually color coded: red
and white. Use red plugs to connect right-channel audio
inputs and outputs (typically labeled R).
Use white plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs
and outputs (typically labeled L). And use yellow
plugs to connect composite video inputs and outputs.

Troubleshooting
If you have any trouble using your A-1VL, look for a solution in the troubleshooting section. If you cant resolve the
issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer.
Power
Cant turn on the A-1VL.
Make sure that the power cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet. (page 11)
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait ve seconds or more, then plug the cable in again.
The power is turned off and the power indicator blinks in white.
The amp protection circuit has been activated. Remove the power cord from the wall outlet immediately and contact
your Onkyo dealer.
Audio
Theres no sound, or its very soft.
When you use the A-1VL as a power amplier (when the DIRECT function is turned on), the sound from the component
connected to the preamplier will be output. If you want to output the sound from a component connected to the A-1VL,
or when you use the A-1VL as a preamplier, use the DIRECT button to turn off the DIRECT function.
Make sure that all audio connecting plugs are pushed in all the way. (page 9)
Make sure that the inputs and outputs of all components are connected properly.
Make sure that the polarity of the speaker cables is correct and that the bare wires are in contact with the metal part
of each speaker terminal. (page 9)
Make sure that the input source is properly selected. (page 12)
If the MUTE indicator blinks, press the remote controllers [MUTING] button to ummute the A-1VL. (page 12)
To use a turntable with an MC-type cartridge requires a commercially available MC phono preamp. (page 10)
Make sure that none of the connecting cables are bent, twisted, or damaged.
Noise can be heard.
Using cable ties to bundle audio cables with power cords, speaker cables, and so on may degrade the audio perfor-
mance, so do not bundle cables and cords together.
An audio cable may be picking up interference. Try repositioning your cables.
Remote Controller
The remote controller doesnt work.
Make sure that the batteries are installed with the correct polarity. (page 8)
Install new batteries. Dont mix different types of batteries or old and new batteries. (page 8)
Make sure that the remote controller is not too far away from the A-1VL, and that theres no obstruction between the
remote controller and the A-1VLs remote control sensor. (page 8)
Make sure that the A-1VL is not subjected to direct sunshine or inverter-type orescent lights. Relocate if necessary.
(page 8)
If the A-1VL is installed in a rack or cabinet with colored glass doors, the remote controller may not work reliably
when the doors are closed. (page 8)
Recording
Cant record.
On your recorder, make sure the correct input is selected. The A-1VL is not equipped with digital input/output
terminals and can perform only analog recording. (page 13)
The signal from the component connected to the MAIN IN terminal cannot be recorded.
The A-1VL contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare
situations, severe interference, noise from an external source, or static electricity may cause it to
lock up. In the unlikely event that this happens, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait
at least ve seconds, and then plug it back in again.
Onkyo is not responsible for damages (such as CD rental fees) due to unsuccessful recordings
caused by the units malfunction. Before you record important data, make sure that the material
will be recorded correctly.
