Safety Information and Technical Specifications
Chapter 1
Safety Guidelines
To avoid personal injury and property damage, carefully follow all the safety steps
listed below when accessing your system or handling the components.
1-1 ESD Safety Guidelines
Electric Static Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components. To prevent dam-
age to your system, it is important to handle it very carefully. The following measures
are generally sufficient to protect your equipment from ESD.
• Use a grounded wrist strap designed to prevent static discharge.
• Touch a grounded metal object before removing a component from the anti-
static bag.
• Handle the add-on card by its edges only; do not touch its components, pe-
ripheral chips, memory modules or gold contacts.
• When handling chips or modules, avoid touching their pins.
• Put the card and peripherals back into their antistatic bags when not in use.
1-2 General Safety Guidelines
• Always disconnect power cables before installing or removing any components
from the computer.
• Disconnect the power cable before installing or removing any cables from the
system.
• Make sure that the add-on card is securely and properly installed on the moth-
erboard to prevent damage to the system due to power shortage.
1-3 An Important Note to Users

Pins
To modify the operation of the backplane,
jumpers can be used to choose between
optional settings. Jumpers create shorts
between two pins to change the function
of the connector. Pin 1 is identified with
a square solder pad on the printed circuit
board. Note: On two pin jumpers, "Closed"
means the jumper is on and "Open" means
the jumper is off the pins.

Boot Controller and Bootable Array
To section describes the steps required establish a boot controller and a bootable
array. If you are creating establishing the boot controller and array on an existing
OS, skip to: Installing the Driver on an Existing Operating System.
3-1 Boot Controller Setup
To set the system to book for a disk drive or controller array:
1. Enter system setup and navigate to the drive boot sequence.
2 Using the arrows provided or grab and drop, move boot controller to the first
item on the list.
If your systems supports only one boot controller, go to the next section.
For more information, refer to your computer’s documentation.
3-2 Creating an Array
This example uses a RAID 1 array (minimum of three hard drives).
You can establish an array with a different RAID level or change the array level
later.
You can create an array using either tool: Array Configuration Utility with keyboard
navigation and menu interface (BIOS) or Adaptec Storage Manager available on
bootable RAID installation CD (GUI).
Warning: Do not mix SAS and SATA drives in the same array. The Adaptec
Storage Manager generates a warning if you try to create a logical drive using a
combination of SAS and SATA disk drives.

Safety Information and Technical Specifications
Chapter 6
Managing Your Storage Space
This chapter details how to create and manage your storage space once the con-
troller and required drivers have been installed.
This chapter also details the Adaptec Storage Manager and other Adaptec RAID
controller utilities.
6-1 About Adaptec Storage Manager
The Adaptec Storage Manager allows administrators to build a storage space for
online data by grouping disk drives into logical drives. The logic drive protect data
through redundancy.
The Adaptec Storage Manager also allows administrators to manage controllers
and drives from one work station. This includes DAS and NAS.
Installing the Adaptec Storage Manager automatically installs the Adaptec Storage
Manager agent. The agent is a service (running in the background) that monitors
system health, events notifications, and other processes on the system.
For more information, see the Adaptec Storage Manager online Help, or documenta-
tion included on the Adaptec Storage Manager Installation CD.
Note: FreeBSD does not support the Adaptec Storage Manager to create/configure
arrays. Use theARC utility instead.
6-1
Add-on Card User's Guide
Installing Adaptec Storage Manager
For installation file and instructions, see the Adaptec Storage Manager Installation
CD. This CD also includes a User’s Guide for Internal RAID Storage and other
documentation.
6-2 The Adaptec RAID Controller Configuration Utility
The Adaptec RAID Controller Configuration (ARCCONF) provides basic array and
configuration management functions. The ARCCONF is a command line tool which
can create/remove logical drives, change configuration settings, and allow admin-
istrators to troubleshoot problems.
Specific instructions for using the ARCCONF can be
ARCCONF and the Command Line Interface (CLI) for Internal RAID Storage User’s
Reference, which describes how to use ARCCONF, are included on the Adaptec
Storage Manager Installation CD.
Note: It is recommended that only advanced users familiar with command line
interfaces use ARCCONF. Currently, ARCCONF is not supported on FreeBSD. To
create and manage arrays, use theARC utility.
6-3 About the Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility
The Adaptec RAID Configuration (ARC) utility allows administrators to manage
controllers, disk drivers and arrays. It is intended pre-operating system installation
use. This utility includes the following tools: Array Configuration Utility, A -Select
utility, and Disk Utilities.
The Array Configuration Utility (ACU) creates and manages arrays and drives. The
A -Select utility modifies the controller and disk drive settings (includes SerialSelect,
SATASelect®, and SCSISelect®). Disk Utilities formats disk drives.
6-2
Safety Information and Technical Specifications
6-4 The Adaptec Flash Utility
The Adaptec Flash Utility (AFU) allows administrators to update, save, and manage
RAID controller firmware BIOS and NonVolatile RAM. The utility is text based.
It is recommended that, although the AFU provides safeguards against improper
configuration, AFU management should be performed by an experienced technician
or administrator. Improper use may damage the RAID controller.
6-5 Choosing a Utility
It is recommended that administrators use the BIOS-based ACU to create a bootable
array and the Adaptec Storage Manager for storage management tasks.
